Meta Tag

Meta tags are tags placed on websites for informational purposes. They are used to create informative descriptions about the website and its content for search engines, social media platforms, browsers, and various applications.

What is a Meta Tag?

Meta tags are placed within the <head>...</head> section of the HTML code. They are created to provide information about the website's content. Meta tags are particularly crucial for search engines. Search engine bots collect data marked with meta tags when they visit websites. This data determines how your website appears in search engine results and also influences its ranking.

Proper use of meta tags can elevate your website to a valuable resource in the eyes of search engines. This can help your site rank higher than your competitors for relevant keywords, thereby attracting more traffic.

Most Commonly Used Meta Tags

Like all technologies, meta tags have evolved over time. While many meta tags have become obsolete, new ones have been developed. For example, the keywords meta tag, once widely used and still found on many websites, is now disregarded by search engines, including Google.

In the use of meta tags on websites, those that are currently considered relevant by search engines are typically employed. Therefore, it makes more sense to use meta tags actively recognized and preferred by developers and SEO experts endorsed by Google in your projects. The most frequently used meta tags are:

Description

The description tag determines how your site will appear in Google search results. Short descriptions about the pages and content are conveyed through this tag.

Robots and Googlebot

The Robots and Googlebot tags dictate how Google and other search engine bots should index your site. These tags can take various values, some of which are:

  • All: Indicates that there are no restrictions on search engines indexing your site.
  • Noindex: Pages with this value will not be listed in the search results provided by search engines.
  • Nofollow: Does not follow the links on the page where it is used. If not used, all relevant pages are scanned by bots for indexing.

Nosnippet and Max-snippet

These prevent any short summary of your website from being included in search results. Using max-snippet:0 instead of nosnippet achieves the same result. Additionally, you can choose to show snippets of a character length you enter with max-snippet:(number). If you enter -1 as the value, you allow Google to automatically decide and select the best length.

<meta name=""robots"" content=""max-snippet:0"">

Nositelinkssearchbox

In Google searches, some websites' results include a search box that allows you to search within that website. This meta tag prevents the display of a site-specific search box on your site.
